This process takes place in our technical warehouse before the equipment is used again, to ensure proper hygiene and keep the audio gear up to operating standards.
Why headphone hygiene matters
The wireless headphones used at events are shared devices that come into direct contact with users’ skin. The parts most exposed to contact are the ear cushions, the headband and the controls.
| Headphone part | Contact with the user | Possible contamination |
|---|---|---|
| Ear cushions | Contact with ears and skin | Sweat, skin residue |
| Headband | Contact with hair | Dust and bacteria |
| Buttons and controls | Handled with the hands | Bacterial transfer |
That’s why every headphone set is cleaned and sanitized in the tech lab before it goes out again.
Headphone cleaning protocol
Sanitizing is carried out by trained staff following a standard operating procedure applied after every rental return.
| Step | Operation | Goal |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Manual surface cleaning | Remove dirt and residue |
| 2 | Disinfectant application | Reduce microbial contamination |
| 3 | Drying and ventilation | Prepare for recharging |
The sanitizing steps
1. Surface cleaning
The headphone surfaces are cleaned by hand with cloths and cleaning solutions to remove residue from use, dust and built-up dirt.
2. Sanitizing
After cleaning, a disinfectant with fungicidal and bactericidal properties is applied to reduce the microbial load on the surfaces.
3. Drying
The headphones are left to dry before being placed in the charging systems or transport cases.
Microbiological testing and results
The effectiveness of the cleaning procedure was verified through microbiological testing on samples of headphones used at events.
| Surface | Contamination before cleaning | After sanitizing |
|---|---|---|
| Ear cushions | ~280 CFU | ~18 CFU |
| Headband | ~440 CFU | ~9 CFU |
| Transport cases | ~9 CFU/cm² | <0.1 CFU/cm² |
The results show a significant reduction in microbial contamination after the sanitizing protocol is applied.
Cleaning the transport cases
The cases used to transport the headphones are also cleaned and disinfected in the tech lab. This prevents contaminated surfaces from transferring microorganisms back onto sanitized equipment.
Sanitizing during events
In addition to the sanitizing done in our tech lab, in some cases headphones can also be quickly sanitized on site during the event.
This service is especially useful at conferences or conventions with back-to-back sessions. Silentsystem technical teams can step in with the equipment needed to clean the headphones between sessions.
